With so many unwanted pets being brought in – a puppy, two staffis, a rottweiler and two cats this week, we are having a real struggle to keep going. Every dog and cat brought in needs to be wormed, de-flead, vaccinated and have a health check – then we’re on to spaying and neutering when they have settled down. Our vet expenses are ongoing, we’ve seen a big rise in food costs and heating and our overheads go up and up. On the plus side we love caring for the animals and knowing that we can make a difference. What would happen to the strays if we didn’t take them? We all know the answer to that one. Ponies would be neglected, goats ritually slaughtered and cats would be left out in the cold. When pets need patching up and pain relief there would be no one to help them, they would go on suffering.
Jack Spratt, shown above with Miss Nolene, has been here for over seven years. He is a disabled dog with only three legs, one had been torn off and he had multiple fractures when he came in. Nolene, is his best friend and constant companion. She came in a while after Spratt and she was also in a bad way. She was paralysed and needed complicated surgery in order to recover. They are both fine now and in our ‘golden oldie’ club. We never put animals to sleep because of their age. Sunny, one of our oldest staffis, is 17 years, Japonica, a lovely pony, is 35 and Peaches, our feisty ginger cat is 18. These are our oldest animal friends at present, we have many others who are catching them up.
We don’t have paid staff, everyone is a volunteer and any help you give us goes directly for the care of the animals. Even a small donation makes a big difference to us. It’s all about numbers – if enough people gave us even a £1 we would be able to carry on without any worries. We have a standing order form if you can manage a small monthly donation (say £2.00) please send your name and address and we’ll post it out to you.
Knowing that there are so many animals who desperately need us is what keeps us going. The happy endings are wonderful and we couldn’t achieve any of this without you – many, many thanks for all your help.
A big thank you from Krystal. Alright, can I go back inside now?
