We’ve just reared Squabbie (he’s doing well and feeding himself now) and here we go again. One of our kind Chesterfield vets had these two baby pigeons handed in and brought them to us right away. They are frail little babies and we don’t know how long it is since they’ve had food. Don’t they look bedraggled? Dehydrated and rapidly losing the will to live. But we saved Squabbie and hopefully we’ll be able to do the same for these two tiny waifs.
One is larger than the other, it depends on who can push and shove harder in the nest and so get the most of their mother’s regurgitated food. Keeping them warm and snug in the towel was a lifesaver too. First we gave them a sip of egg yolk which is a quick boost for any fragile baby bird. It’s natural for them to like egg, after all they came from one didn’t they.
Both babies slurped it down and then went on to the special moist mix which we make up to replicate what their mom would give them. They’ve had three feeds already and are settled down and snug in a paper towel nest, they’re nice and warm and will have another feed later on, fingers crossed they make it.
