Top vet says ritual slaughter is cruel

We’ve been campaigning against ritual slaughter of goats for many years and now one of the U.K’s top vets has issued a statement saying that it is cruel.   There is no doubt in our minds that slaughtering animals without stunning them first causes them stress and terror.  Slitting their throats and letting them bleed to death is a barbaric practice.  That it is done on religious grounds doesn’t make it any more acceptable – there were many horrific things done in mediaeval times in the name of religion but that doesn’t mean to say that they should be carried out now when we are more enlightened.

Do you know that if you buy meat from supermarkets you may well be purchasing it from ritually slaughtered animals?   There is no requirement at present to label this meat.

This is a first start.   When meat is labelled as from animals that have been ritually killed then buyers can make a choice as to whether they want to eat a creature whose last moments were filled with pain and terror. It’s not just goats who are killed in this way, it’s sheep, lambs and chickens too.

Only public pressure will put an end to ritual slaughter.   Best of all is not to become vegetarian and not eat a dead animal.   It’s a much healthier option and will help save the planet too.
