There once was a little duckling

This little orphan was found by a kind Pet Samaritan near a busy main road. Mum was nowhere to be seen. It’s a miracle it was spotted in time as baby ducklings are easy targets for predators not to mention oncoming traffic. It soon settled in at the Sanctuary with Jo and Kate playing surrogate mums.

By chance we had just the right size paddling pool and the little one took to it like a duck to water.

Ducklings need a ready source of clean water but the water should be no more than a quarter inch or so deep. Enough to play and splash about in but not too swim. They don’t produce waterproofing oil until 4 weeks old – in the wild mum applies it. Letting ducklings swim too early can result in death from drowning. It’s essential to make sure they dry off properly after a dip too, so they don’t get a chill.

It’s baby steps at the moment but the little chap is doing well. Enjoy reading our Duck tales? Why not make a small donation to Puddle Duck Ranch. Without your help, we can’t continue to help little ones just like this.
