It’s unusual and surprising to find baby hedgehogs still wandering about this time of the year. Thank you to Chris who rescued this little chap and brought him in to us for a winter of fattening up and growing instead of hibernating. He’s much too small to go to sleep and if he did would be likely to not wake up. Hedgehogs need to be fat and full grown to see them through the cold months. If you find a small hedgehog wandering around, especially during the day, please bring it to us, we have heated pads to keep them warm (which is critical) and will feed them on until they are big enough for hibernation.
First things – keep the hoglet warm, a hot water bottle or in a box near to a radiator. Offer food on a flat dish, cat food chicken flavour is best, also meal worm and sunflower seeds. A drink of clean water in a shallow dish is appreciated, don’t give cow’s milk which upsets them.
You can ring us for advice and bring in as soon as you are able. The more hoglets we get through the winter the better chance of survival these almost endangered little creatures will have. Hedgehog numbers are substantially down (chemicals, pollution, slug pellets, toxic farming methods) let’s save every one we can.
