The Golden Oldie Club

cats - pebbles in dress

We have a lot of ‘golden-oldies’ who are permanent residents here and they do very well in this relaxed lifestyle.  Out for a stroll during the day, lots of nice meals and back inside and warm and cosy at night.  It’s the combination of good food and as much exercise as they want that seems to keep them going.

Pebbles, shown above, is in her late teens, she has a heart murmur but is fit and agile, she seems to look younger now that we have sorted her coat out.  Pebbles had to be shaved to get rid of the mats and she still wears a pretty frock to keep her warm.

cats - barrimanilo 7

This is Barrimanilo, an aged cat who came in to us with a badly injured nose.  It’s healed up now and doesn’t bother him.   Barri is a lovely chap with a sociable nature, his age (late teens) is catching up with him but he enjoys life and can eat for England – not biscuits though, he likes pouches and to have a fuss and a bit of conversation.

dogs - Jack & nolene 5

This is Jack Spratt and Miss Nolene, firm friends, in fact they are inseparable.   Jack was brought in first, as a pup and badly injured (he was missing a front leg) and Nolene came in six months later, again she had major health problems.  They’ve been with us over twelve years and both these old stagers need special care.  We give them herbal supplements, vitamins and minerals to keep them as fit as possible but Jack especially, doesn’t walk so well now that he’s older.   He still thinks he’s a Great Dane though!

geese - gregory

This is Gregory who is an aged gander, he’s been with us for over ten years and was an adult when he came in.  Gregory was being bullied by other geese, he is a bit of a wimp which is unusual in ganderland.   Gregory is a sociable bird and will eat from your hand and follow you around.  He has a broken wing, sustained in a fight with a fox.   It doesn’t bother him now though.   Gregory does have some strange obsessions – he loves big soft toys and likes to keep them in his hut with him – his favourite at the moment is a pig hippo – he sleeps next to it at night!

Mischa blue sky

This is Mischa, a calico long haired cat who has been here for the past 14 years.   She was found in a salt box at the side of the road with four kittens.   We reared them all and found homes for three of them, the fourth, Myrtle is still here with her mum – they love each other.  Mischa has a wonderful temperament, soft and gentle and very affectionate.   She likes to meet people and is on the payroll as a ‘greeter’.  She’ll come us to see you when you arrive and loves a fuss.

We have many more ‘golden oldies’ and will put some more of their stories online in the near future.   If you would like to sponsor one of them that would be much appreciated.   Let us know who you like best and we’ll send you a photo, their history and adoption certificate.   A donation (made payable to Pet Samaritans or made online) goes to help with their care and is much appreciated.  It makes a great gift.
