It’s been a sad couple of days, first the smallest girl squirrel passed away and then her brother and sister went too. They stopped feeding and simply fell asleep. At first we thought they were getting stronger but suddenly they weakened and it was all over.
These little orphans were always on a knife edge, the squirrel babies we have reared before (successfully) have been older when brought in with eyes open and furry coats. It was heartbreaking to see these new babies go after such a struggle to rear them. We are grateful fior everyone’s good wishes for their survival.
At least we are consoled that they were warm and fed and clean and comfortable, cared for as their mother would have done if she had been with them. It might be that they didn’t have colostrum from her – the lack of it would make it very hard for them to pull through.
Small as they were they responded to us and knew they were loved. Rest in peace little ones.
