We’ve already had firework nights in this area – one went on for over three hours last week. A lot of dogs are terrified, cats too and ponies. We had a pony blinded in one eye by a rocket a few years ago. Alright, so we expect the bangers and screechers on and around Bonfire Night but why so early? It used to be just the one night, November 5th, but now the firework season spreads over several weeks and then starts up again at New Year.
What can you do to help the dogs and cats who are terrified? Effective help is at hand with some herbal products. We stock Dorwest Herbs Skullcap and Valerian tablets and they really work, we’ve been using them for over 30 years. Dogs need 1 tablet for every 5k of weight and it’s best to split the dose and adminster morning and night.
These wonderful ‘magic’ pills are good for any pet suffering from anxiety so we use them for nervous dogs or when going to the vet or before an operation. If your dog has a severe firework phobia you need to start giving the tablets a few weeks in advance. Some dogs have them long term and there is no problem with this. You can tell the difference when a dog lacking in confidence or separation anxiety is having his skullcap and valerian (calm and settled) or stops taking them (back to being nervy and stressed)
We also stock organic Valerian Compound which is in a dropper bottle so you can easily put a few drops straight in the mouth or on the food. This works especially well with cats.
You can obtain both these products from us and we’ll post out if you can’t get in to purchase. The Skullcap & Valerian tablets come in three sizes – 100, 200 and 500 and the Valerian Compound is in a 20ml or 100ml bottle.
We have a free leaflet with advice on Firework Phobias and telling you all about Skullcap & Valerian – pick up in Reception.
