Rescues keep us busy

hedgehog - injured legBank holidays are always busy and this one has been no exception.  We’ve had an almost non-stop influx of animals and birds, mostly injured pigeons, and poorly hedgehogs.  More cats have come in and kittens (too young to be re-homed) and a large greyhound.  She’s a lovely girl, well behaved and friendly.  We understood it was a small lurcher coming in because of emergency domestic problems but Holly turned out to be a very tall ex-racing greyhound!

We’ve patched all the pigeons up, they now need rest and recuperation before they go on their way again.  Because they are accustomed to us humans they are more resilient and not so stressed at being handled so they have more chance of making a full recovery.  It’s probably their close proximity to us that gets them in to trouble.

The hedgies are more difficult, if it’s cuts and scrapes we can deal with that and they survive, but sometimes they’ve been poisoned.   There doesn’t look to be anything wrong with them but they are lethargic.  The ones in at the moment aren’t well but they are still eating so that’s a good sign.  Please don’t use slug pellets in your garden or anything that can hurt them. Hedgehogs are so in decline that they are now on the brink of being considered an endangered species.   If you’re moving rubbish please do it carefully.  It might be Mrs. Hedgehog’s holiday home.
