Three tiny baby hoglets where brought into the Animal Sanctuary recently after being found underneath a sheet of insulation. Unfortunately the mum was distrubed after the sheets were lifted away and no amount of coaxing would tempt her back to the babies. We received a phone call about the orphans and of course agreed to help. When the babies arrived they had not had food for quite some time. Their body temperatures had dropped and it was touch and go whether they would pull through. Thanks to some careful intensive nursing by Jo, the little ones started to improve and were soon feeding from a syringe.
Feeding and caring for baby hoglets is time consuming, so you are always best to contact your local wildlife center to see if they can help. Under no circumstances should you give them cow’s milk which could kill them. Goat’s milk with Goat’s colostrum may be used for a short period of time for Hoglets and powdered milk formulas such as Esbilac are the best option in the beginning.
We are often asked what to do if you find a hedgehog that looks unwell or has signs of injury. If possible pick up the hedgehog with a good pair of strong gloves and bring it indoors. Hedgehogs can often have ticks on them, so gloves are important to use when handling them. A good sized cardboard box with shredded newspaper or an old towel is perfect for a bed. If you think the hedgehog is in shock or injured, a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel so there is a nice gentle heat coming through can be added. Put it in the bottom of a large box with enough room for the hedgehog to move away if it chooses. Meaty cat or dog food and fresh water can be offered. Call us as soon as possible on 07872 421878 and we can advise and offer assistance.
