The baby hedgehog we rescued a few weeks ago is doing well and growing up fast. Solo was barely hanging on when she came in (yes, a girl not a boy) but keeping her warm and bottle feeding every two hours did the trick and she’s now well on the road to recovery.
Solo had the will to live which makes all the difference and she loves food so was good at taking her bottle. She’s now on solid food and loves sunflower seeds and mealworms (if anyone can bring some of these wildlife staples in it would be very much appreciated).
Solo is good to handle and trusts humans so she doesn’t curl up when handled. She’s a paler colour than most hedgehogs we’ve had in and shades of light fawn and grey in her spines and on her face. Having such a close relationship with a hedgehog is an opportunity to study their behaviour. They are observant and intelligent creatures each with a distinct personality.
We have some African Pygmy hedgehogs in at present (good homes wanted) – they were brought in when their owner moved house. These domesticated hedgehogs are quite different to their wild counterparts and like to play with wheels and toys. The motivation of the wild ones is food and sleep and going walkabout – hedgehogs do like to roam.
Solo’s favourite place is burrowing into the cushions on the sofa!
