Hedgehogs – We’ve called the hedgehog with an injured leg Velvet, her fur is so very soft and chocolatey brown. You might think that all hedgehogs are the same but they all have different faces and are individuals. Velvet is unusual in that she is unafraid and doesn’t mind being stroked and picked up. We are still being very careful of her leg as it hurts and she whimpers when she has to move it. She is moving around carefully and eating some meal worms and peanuts. Is she so friendly because she’s one of ‘our’ hedgehogs? It would be nice to think so although sad that she has become injured and amazing that she has travelled such a distance away. We released most of the overwintered hedgehogs, most of the rest escaped – they climb better than we anticipated and move very fast when they want to!
The bird family – The ducklings have all been released now and are having a great time swimming around on our pond – there’s plenty of small fish for them to eat so they are happy.
Jimbo the jackdaw has been released into a safe and sheltered part of our conservation area. We’ve seen him a few times since and he looks fine – free and happy. The crow we reared flew off after a day or two, he had his strength and was fully grown. Hopefully he’ll have found some more crows to fly with.
All the injured pigeons have recovered and been released. We’ve not heard whether Homer has made it back to Hull yet, but it’s early days. The others were wild and we think we still see them around here – it is hard to tell when they are flying – except for one pearly grey fella who keeps following me around ……
