Rescue of Lonesome Dove

We had what was described to us as a ‘dove’ brought in to us yesterday.  He had been found in a garden and unable to fly.   The bird is, in fact, a wood pigeon, mabye he had ventured into backyard space in an attempt to find food.   He’s scared but doesn’t seem to have obvious injuries, it’s possible that he has flown into something (a patio door?) and given himself a concussion.    It’s difficult to treat an injured bird, the horror of being handled by humans sometimes causes more damage to them than the injury.    We’ve established that his wings aren’t broken and we’re  hoping that a few days rest and recovery will do the trick.

Wood pigeons are the most common pigeons in the U.K.  but it’s only recently that they have begun venturing into cities.   Their normal diet is seeds, fruit, berries, worms and insects.   They also take farms crops so aren’t popular when land is under cultivation.   When you hear a familiar ‘coo-ing’ sound – that is the wood pigeon.  These birds nest in trees and are easily distinguishable because they have grey plumage with a white band across each wing.       Their feathers shade to green and chestnut around the neck.

Our feathered friend does seem quite a bit better already and as soon as he is able to fly again and has had plenty to eat, we’ll find a secluded woodland spot and release him.

Please help us to continue to rescue and help wildlife if you can – your small change can make a big difference and any donation is very much appreciated. [donate]
