Rearing a baby owl

birds - baby owl 20

It isn’t as demanding as caring for some of the smaller birds we get brought in, but even so, Ozzie has to have his food prepared in advance and be given it at regular times.  He gulps it down quite quickly and has a surprisingly large mouth behind that hooked beak.   He needs fur, bone and feathers, although the bones aren’t too big at this stage so I don’t offer heads and legs as yet.  I’ve tried putting food out for him to help himself but he isn’t at that stage yet …. ‘I want you to feed me please‘ is what he seem to say.

In between feeds he snoozes with his eyes half closed.  He’s not quite so placid as he looks though – leave the cage door open for a second and he’s up and out.   I had to retrieve him again this lunchtime.  It’s instinct I suppose.   He’s looking good and that’s the main thing.
