A pair of desirable Degus have been brought in, it’s a sad case where their owner could no longer care for them. They are a pretty colour, both smudgy shades of cream and grey, we’ve called them Silver and Pearl sot that was easy.
The’ve been well looked after so far and are tame, you have to keep it up though. Degus are fairly easy to tame, they will hand feed and soon recognise who is caring for them. These two have a big cage which is they home and will come with them . Degus are intelligent creatures and good companions, they are sisters and youngsters, they can live to around eight or nine years old.
Degus originate in South America in Chile so they are used to a warm climate. They like to burrow and a big tub of sand or dry soil is liked. They are creatures who like to gnaw on wood so the cage has to be wire or else they would be through it and out. Plenty of branches for them to chew on are essential and can be replenished easily.
Degus are sociable and should not be kept on their own. However, introducing a newcomer in to the group can be difficult. It’s best to get litter mates or know that they are already good friends. They are easy to feed, you can get special Degu pellets from pet superstores and they like nuts and seeds. A little bit of fruit is alright but not too much and nothing with a high sugar content. Degus are prone to diabetes and d shouldn’t have anything with sugar or carbohydrates in it. There are scientific studies being done to see why they get diabetes and this research is helping humans too. The most important part of their diet is meadow hay, if you put plenty in a hay box or a rack in they pet, they will forage through it and eating it will keep them healthy. Fresh water is essential and should be changed daily. More on our pet adoption pages.
