Daisy has started to eat on her own already, although she can’t quite get it right, there’s still food all over her face, her paws and her whiskers but she is having a go and getting some down. She won’t take milk from a bottle even though she wants to suck. A plastic teat – no thanks! This is a determined young lady who wants to do everything her way! She likes kitten chicken pate, but not meaty flavours and isn’t sure about kitten milk. We’ve put baby cat biscuits down as well, just in case. Daisy doesn’t start feeding, she has to have a cuddle and be encouraged to take some food from a spoon and then off she goes, slurping from a saucer.
We’ve found Daisy a friend, which will help to comfort and console her. Baige is a newly kittened mom who has six babies of her own and well developed maternal instincts. Whilst she won’t let Daisy feed (and Daisy knows this isn’t mom so she doesn’t try) she does give this little orphan a lick and a cuddle. Sometimes we have cats with almost weaned kittens who will completely foster an orphan but the timing isn’t right just now and this isn’t possible. We’re trying everything we can think of to keep Daisy going. Nurish-um is a vitamin supplement that increases appetite and helps convalescence. It’s a brown treacly goo but Daisy likes it and licks her medicine from the spoon – yum yum! Kittens this young don’t have a working immune system but every day that Daisy survives gives her more chance.
