At 25 years old, Yorkshire Terrier Jack, was thought to be the U.K.’s oldest dog. He was used to a quiet life but yesterday he was attacked by a Lakeland terrier while on his morning walk. The dog wasn’t on a lead and bit him severely, not letting go for several minutes. Jack’s owner eventually managed to get the dog off him and Jack was rushed to the vet. Sadly he died of his injuries before they arrived.
This was such a sad end for an old dog who should have been able to pass away gently in his sleep in his own basket. If you have a dog who is a dominant character and likely to fight or attack then keeping him on the lead is the only responsible thing to do. Dogs will be dogs, most have the instinct to hunt, fight and defend their owner. They are pack animals and rarely understand that it’s the last thing we want them to do.
Carry a walking stick when you’re out with your dog, even though you don’t need one, it’s a good protection if a dog with attitude problems comes near. Just holding it out can often make a fight dog change his mind.
