News report – culling cats

It’s all about saving wildlife – and the only way to do it say experts in Australia and New Zealand is by culling the feral cat population.  Cats are not native to either country but were introduced by settlers several hundred years ago.  The climate, terrain and food suits them so much that their numbers have increased almost more than any other species.  Both countries love their birds and the feral cats are decimating them to such an extant that some species are in danger of becoming extinct.

In New Zealand the government has vowed to eradicate cats, rats and weasels completely in the next twenty years.   It’s outraged cat lovers the world over but it’s going ahead because environmentalists want to save the birds.  Sterilising cats would surely be possible, couldn’t  treated food be put out, or dropped from drones even.  They do this  to treat sick wildlife in other parts of the world.  A government spokesman has said that pet cats will be spared – so long as they don’t go walkabout maybe.   What is the answer?
