Perjo hss been ready to go for several days, he has become more feisty and watching for his cage door to be open. He’s in full health, fully feathered and feeding himself – he pounces on his mice and chicks and takes them off to eat them. He does seem such a small bird and of course, we’re wondering if he will be alright without our protection. Freedom is everything though and he must live out his destiny. Nothing goes as planned in wildlife-rescue-land – and if we thought we might get a picture of him soaring into the sky we were mistaken!
We had moved Perjo to a shed with an open top door and after we had fed him we opened his cage door and backed away, watching from a discreet distance. Perjo is wide-eyed at the best of times but now his eyes were like saucers. This wasn’t something to be rushed though and he waited and so did we. The wide open spaces must look daunting to a little owl who has only known a nest and then a pen.
Owls are nocturnal – mayhe was waiting for dusk? He was still waiting and watching when it became dark and so we left him. This morning he was gone. We put some more chicks on the shed roof and then we saw him in the trees. It was a great feeling he was free but still around. Later this morning he swooped overhead while we were walking the dogs He looked so happy, flying free just as he should be. Stay safe little friend …….our prayers are with you.
