Lily and Frankie are elderly Lhasos who came in recently. They are lovely characters with great personalities. When we ask them ‘Which one of you is Lily?’ she answers with a lot of Woofs – me, me, me!
They are both in poor condition though, underweight and frail. When we took them to the vets today she was concerned about their lack of condition, we assured her that they are eating well and putting weight on. It’s slower for an elderly dog to get back quickly to a proper body weight though.
Our vet checked their teeth and Lily in particular has problems. She needs work to get her mouth right but the vet says she isn’t strong enough for it to be done yet. When she’s pulled round we’ll take her in for her teeth to be sorted. In the meantime, we’re giving them both Plaque Off which is a natural tooth cleaner and works well. It won’t avoid the need for extractions though and this is what needs to be done as soon as Lily is up to it.
If teeth are neglected the decay can poison the whole system. It’s important for older dogs, and cats, to have regular vet check ups so health problems can be sorted before they turn into life threatening conditions.
Lily and Frankie were vaccinated and chipped while they were at the vets, so at least that’s sorted out. They were glad to be back and wuffled down a dish of sardines before snuggling down in their duvets. Lots of T.L.C. for these little ones – and sardines please if anyone has some spare.
