When you get a new kitten the first instinct is to rush out and buy lots of goodies for the new ‘baby’. Is this really necessary though? Kittens do need a den of their own but improvising one is best. We find that it’s the more sedate older cats who like the cosy bought-in basket. The little kits like somewhere a bit more quirky. Natural materials are best and a wicker laundry basket is always a favourite. You don’t have to buy new, an old one is good enough, the kits will sharpen their claws on it as they grow. Throw a fleece in and some catnip toys and it will be kitten heaven.
Cardboard boxes make ideal kitten condos and the best thing of all is that they are free. Get a selection – really small for the kits who like to play squash-up and a big roomy box for sprawling – fill it with snuggles, fleeces, teddies and cuddle blankets. Another box to play in will be appreciated – cut doors and windows and peepholes – hang string and ribbons, kittens love to play hide and seek. As soon as the boxes have been well used and become a bit grubby, you can recycle them and get more. At least you’ll know that your home made condos will be liked – what cat or kitten can resist a cardboard box? Buy an expensive new bed and you can be sure your cat will look at it suspiciously – you don’t expect me to sit in there do you?
Two more litters of kittens born yesterday to cats recently brought in – little beauties but we urgently need kitten food – any help will be greatly appreciated. [donate]
