Jackdaw rescue

birds - jackdaw

Jimbo the Jackdaw is a youngster and not yet able to fly.  Although he is fully feathered he is immature and was in a poor state when he was found – dehydrated and very hungry.   He isn’t able to fly yet so we are aiming to build him up so that he can gain his strength.   He looks quite a big bird but still opens his beak to be fed, just like a baby!

Why did his parents leave him to fend for himself?  That is something we will never know, perhaps they were frightened off or he managed a little flight and went away from his home turf and became exhausted.   A big thank you to the kind people who became aware of his plight and brought him in.

Jimbo is a real character and we are having to be careful not to ‘tame’ him.  They are very sociable birds who become used to us humans and will follow us around.    We want to release him into the wild as soon as we are able to and it’s hard not to become very attached to this inquisitive and intelligent bird.

Jackdaws are attracted to shiny objects and will steal rings and jewellery and anything shiny and take it back to their nest.   When milk bottles used to have shiny silver tops they were considered very desirable by Mr.Jackdaw and they’d go round tweaking them off the bottles and taking them away.

These birds eat all kinds of things, grubs, insects, eggs and scraps.   Jimbo likes grain, eggs, seeds and mealworm.  If we dig actual worms up and feed them to him he loves it – more please!
