We took Spratt to the vet’s yesterday and our worry over his part leg was eased. Although there is nothing can be done to help him, the vet gave him the all clear. Normally the leg would be taken off at the shoulder so the end would never touch the ground. This hasn’t happened with Spratt because he wasn’t able to stand the surgery when he first came in with the injury and the situation hasn’t changed. Such an operation would be too much for him. Also he uses the stump to balance as his hind legs are not good either. Spratt hates anyone touching his stump and won’t have any sort of protection or dressing put on it. However, it’s going on alright for the time being. This was the good news.
And the bad? The swelling on his testicles is cancer and he has to have an operation as soon as possible. So he’s booked in for next week. We are hoping it will be successful – we’ve promised him his very own packed lunch for when he comes back from the vets. Spratt loves lunch boxes and is always trying to get in to them – a sandwich? A piece of chicken? Some boilded ham? He’s in heaven.
Did he behave? Perfectly with the vet but in the waiting room – no way. Spratt put his fists up to fight as soon as he was through the door. It doesn’t matter that the dogs are ten times his size, he wants to have a go. He doesn’t threaten either, if he gets the chance it’s straight in with the teeth. Waiting outside till it was his turn kept the peace. Spratt will never change – he may be a small Jack Russell but inside he’s a pit bull – only where other dogs are concerned – with people he’s a sweetie.
