No matter how hard we try, sometimes the little creatures who are brought in to us just can’t be saved. The hedgehog who arrived this week had a bad injury to one of his back legs, the other hind leg was missing. Had he been caught in a strimmer or lawnmower? There was nothing to be done for him which was such a pity as he was a beautiful hedgehog and looked to be otherwise in good health.
Some of the baby birds we get are just two small to be reared, where there is a chance of survival though we’ll try our very best. If you find a small animal with an injury it’s best to take it to the vet who will make a decision based on experience, the chances of recovery and the best way to minimize pain and suffering. This is what it comes down to – we don’t want any creature to be in pain and to suffer. The stress of being handled and being in an unknown and terrifying environment is difficulty enough.
If you are gardening using a scythe or power tools please check for hedgehogs first, we still get many brought in with lacerations and missing limbs.
