Pigeons are very accident prone, perhaps because they live amongst us in towns and urban environments. We get an injured pigeon brought in most days. The one shown above had no obvious injuries when he came in but he couldn’t fly. One brought in yesterday has an eye injury, it looks sore but not too bad and hopefully he won’t lose his sight.
Pigeons do well in captivity, they like the warmth, security and the ready supply of food. After they are over the initial shock of being handled, they let us patch them up and once they start eating again it’s usually only a matter of time before they get their strength and ability to fly back. They like companionship and we think that having a friend with them helps them to recover, unless they are too ill or injured and they have to be on their own. The pigeon above is nearly ready to move on to the next stage, the one below is still frail and has an injury on his neck – he’ll spend a a few days more in ‘intensive care’.
