Injured hedgehog learns to trust

When Robin was brought in recently we saw that he was badly injured, one of his hind legs was missing.  It was a clean cut right off.  It’s healed up now and he’s managing to get around without any real problems.   But this little hoglet has been very timid so far and wouldn’t come out when we were around.    The food disappeared regularly but unless we found him and uncurled him (not always easy as he was frightened and getting himself into a tight prickly ball) we couldn’t check him out.

Yesterday was a ‘magic moments’ day though – it was when little Robin finally learned to trust us – when we put his food down he came straight out for it and then scampered over to say hello.   Even with only three legs, hedgehogs are quick and nimble.  It may be that his leg doesn’t hurt any more or perhaps just that he associates us with food – but Robin (a three wheeler!) is now best friends with us.   He likes us to stroke him and will take food from our hands.   He’s interested in everything but only for a while and then it’s back to his hay den to sleep it off.
