It’s going to rain today – how do I know? The horses are lying down. They do this whenever there is a change in the weather and rain is on the way. Cows lie down too – goats wouldn’t dream of sitting in damp grass, if it’s going to be wet they run for home. Animals are very sensitive to the environment, perhaps they lie down because they instinctively know they won’t get the chance again if there are storms coming. The horses in the photo are all sanctuary residents who have been with us for a long time. Draco, on the right, was rescued from a meat market. Beulah, next to him (mostly white) was also saved from slaughter, she was lame and just about to go on the meat lorry. Next to her is Stormer, who had a bad eye injury when we rescued him, it took months of dedicated nursing to get him better. Flat out at the left of the picture is Painter, also saved from the meat wagon. Cobs like these are always in demand for meat, they are good ‘do-ers’ and put on weight easily so the people who trade in horse flesh like them – they are a ‘cash-crop’ to them. Draco, Beulah, Stormer and Painter are safe, these good friends have a home with us for life.
Please help us to care for the rescued horses and ponies, they have regular visits from the farrier and equine dentist, hay and straw and keep blocks in winter, vitamins and minerals and wormers. These good natured horses are the lucky ones – so many more are sold at markets throughout the U.K. every week. We try to rescue them whenever funds are available. If you’d like to adopt one of these big horses please get in touch and we’ll send you more details. Adoption costs £15 per year and makes a super gift. [donate]
