Homer has been ready to fly to freedom for some weeks now – but he didn’t want to go! We’ve left the aviary door open but all he’s done is look at us and ask when the next meal is coming. Pigeons are home birds and the worry has been that he thought this was it. We want all our rescued birds to have their freedom though, sitting on a perch in an aviary is only a temporary life.
Freedom can be a scary concept though when a bird has been injured. Homer’s foot was hurt and took a long time to heal up. There is nothing wrong with his wings though and he’s put plenty of weight on and gained his strength. Yesterday he decided that today was the day. We opened up and after a few minutes he decided to take that first brave flight through the aviary door. Would he dither and change his mind and stay around? Not at all, Homer remembered where is home is, circulled once and then flew straight off. He’s on his way home to his pigeon loft in Hull. Safe journey little bird, it’s been a privilege to know you.
