The first night is critical but the little hoglets have survived. They are taking their bottles and we’re keeping them warm on a heated pad with a soft towel nest. The milk we’re giving them is specially made for orphan babies, it’s ideal for kittens and puppies too. Ordinary milk would kill them. The hoglets have taken to their bottles well and suck avidly but only for a minute or so and then they’d had enough and go back to sleep. Feeding them is little and often – just as mum would do. She’d go off foraging and then let them suckle when she came back to the nest.
The spines look fiercesome but actually they aren’t too sharp at this stage – even so, we’re wrapping them in a towel, they are still a bit prickly.
