Just to let everyone know that our hedgehogs are doing well – we’ve had lots of hoglets brought in which means that there have been second litters born this year. They would undoubtedly die off if we didn’t rescue them as they don’t have enough body weight to survive hibernation.
The tiny ones brought in earlier on were the hardest to rear, two hourly feeds! But all except one are thriving and the new hoglets – Robin and Sparky are doing well also. This fella in the picture is Biggie who came in with the little ones in one of the first batches. He soon outgrew his pals and because he has shown no signs of wanting to go to sleep or behaving anything like a typical hedgehog, he is still very much a ‘mummy’s pet’. Biggie watches t.v. with me and makes scuffling noises when he wants to be picked up and likes to snuggle up on my knee. Oh dear. I love him to bits and know the day will come (but not till next year) when he’ll go off to be a proper wild thing. We do have a sheltered stack yard with lots of hay barns so i know he’ll be as safe as he can be there when we let him go.
Will he still come when I call him for a treat? I think so, hedgehogs, even when they haven’t been handled a lot, are usually well disposed to human neighbours. Tasty titbits help of course.
