It’s hedgehog time of year and we’re getting underweight hoglets brought in every day now. They need to be up to weight before they can be allowed to hibernate or else they won’t have enough body fat to last through the winter. Fortunately all the ones brought in so far are eating well and will soon fatten up. They like a cosy haybox to keep warm and they come out to eat at night.
The larger hedgehog brought in a few days ago is doing very well, we’ll go on feeding him for as long as he wants to take it but think he’ll be ready to hibernate in anothe week or two. Some of the more recent rescues are quite small and it will take longer to get them to the right weight.
One or two of them have a lot of ticks, we check them over as soon as they come in and remove the parasites with a little gadget that gets them off easily in one piece. Persuading uur baby hedgehogs to uncurl and let us do this is quite anoither matter.
