It’s officially winter and now the mild weather is long gone, the grass has died back and we are feeding the ponies hay every day. Horses are grazing animals and their digestion is designed for a constant input of food. Hay forms the bulk of their diet in winter with feeds of oats and pony nuts as well. They love carrots and apples, if you have any to spare please bring them in. Hay is very expensive nowadays, the days of £1.00 a bale are just a fond memory. The weather is more unsettled in summer with no defined ‘haymaking’ time. If the cut grass gets even a slight shower of rain, it’s spoiled and not worth baling. We can buy hay in but it is £4.00 plus for a bale, it gets more expensive as the winter progresses and stocks get low. If you can buy even one bale of hay for the ponies it would be much appreciated. Our online shop is our ‘hay barn’, if you can paypal we’ll do the rest. Many thanks.
