Noel has been with us for the past twelve years. We saved him from being sent to market where he would have ended up as a dinner. Sadly, today he passed away. Although he was very old (in turkey years) and we knew it was coming, we are still heartbroken. Noel has been a wonderful friend and companion. You might think that is a strange thing to say about a turkey but unless you know these gentle and intelligent birds, you might not believe it to be possible. Noel has been a great friend and companion, interested om everything we have done and always cheerful, polite and pleasant.
Tu4rkeys are timid birds,. little wonder as the ghastly treatment they receive from most humans. I have never failed to be impressed by their polite and laid back nature. Noel would always wait for me to go through a gate or door first. He would eat from the same dish as the cats (he was very partial to cat food) and let them have their pick before joining in. He liked to be fed from a spoon, especially when it was something specially tasty.
Noel liked an egg for breakfast and loved a mince pie. He had many treats this Christmas. Turkeys are large birds and some people are afraid of them. They needn’t be. If one of our turkeys approach it’s because they are hoping for a titbit or just want to chat.
Noel has been buried and we’ll plant a tree over him. Nothing really changes, his atoms are the same and cannot be destroyed although they have changed for the present time. We will resuce more turkeys and hope that Noel will be reincarnated amongst them. He’ll come back to us for sure.
If anyone would like to send a donation to help us rescue more turkeys and save them from being killed please send to Pet Samaritans, P.O. Box 745 Chesterfield, S40 9NB. You will learn more about turkey characteristics, lifestyle and behavour, you can name your turkey hourself, come and meet him or her and follow his progress. Please help us to give sanctuary to more of these magnificent birds.
Noel in full pride!
