Fat boy dog needs to slim

Sandy has been in a new home but, although everyone was very kind to him,  he’s become a fat boy dog and it hasn’t worked out.  Walking him was difficult and he’s put a lot of weight on so he’s come back and slimming him down is priority.   Jack Russell’s are notorious manipulators and ‘more please’ must have been hard to resist.

He’s a real character, a tiny chap, some chihuahua in there surely and he has a bit of that breed’s temperament!   He’s on a regime of more exercise now, gradually does it though as he’s so out of shape.  Like all our dogs he was very happy to be back with us and gave us a lot of fuss and love.  He’s back in his old room and pleased with himself, bossing us about and telling us what to do already!

Jack Russells are a very special breed and full of idiosyncrasies.  We have several as permanent sanctuary residents.  Miss Nolene has been with us for over twelve years and is still as feisty as ever.  She’s as picky about food as she is about the people she meets, Nolene has never been on the volunteer dog walking rota although she’s as good as gold with us.  Don’t try to pick her up though, unless she wants you to!

Sandy is having a weight watchers diet now, lean meat and fish and cut out the carbs.  We want to get this fat boy dog down to the slimline lad he was previously.  There are many health problems associated with pet obesity just the same as in humans.  Diabetes is a high risk condition and having daily injections means a miserable life for any pet.  They often go blind when they are diabetic which is so confusing and upsetting for them.

You can buy special weight watchers food for overweight pets but it’s still processed and factory made.  We think fresh is best, if it’s a small portion it should be as good and as nutritious as possible.   A sprinkle of oats for breakfast, fish and carrots for lunch, a small piece of lamb for supper, what could be better?  Nature’s Menu, frozen pet food (you can buy it from us) does it all for you – individual pouches of fresh human grade meat, take it out of the freezer, let it de-frost and then put it in the dish and watch them wuffle it up – how easy is that?
