Faithful terrier finds her way back

When Rags came in to the sanctuary because her elderly owner had to go into hospital she settled down straight away.   It had been difficult for her owner to look after her because of illness and Rags loved sanctuary life from the start.  She is a lovely little broken coated terrier around middle age with a cheerful and friendly nature.  It was obvious that Rags liked routine and regular meals and lots and lots of fuss.   We bathed her and fed her up and gave her lots of treats and she blossomed.    However she had not officially been handed over to us because her owner might want her back if his health improved and eventually it did.   He came out of hospital and although still a bit frail decided to have Rags back.  That was fine, although there were a lot of sad faces when she went and we missed her.

A few days later, when we went to open up the kennels first thing in the morning, there was a little dog jumping up and down at the door and asking to be let in.   It was Rags!   As soon as the door was open she ran straight in to her room.   We discovered that she had escaped from the garden the day before and hadn’t been seen since.    How had she made it through the town centre, across the by-pass and all the busy main roads?   How did she know the way to the sanctuary?   It hardly seemed possible but she had done it anyway.

When we told her owner that she was back he agreed that he wasn’t well enough to look after her and that she should stay.    We were all very pleased.   Rags had never been walked between her former home and the sanctuary and it is miles away.   How did she make it?   Dogs are amazing aren’t they?
