When Toby and Tiger’s owner was admitted to hospital as an emergency, the social services alerted us to the plight of these two elderly cats who had been left home alone. We went to fetch them in straight away and they stayed with us for four months until their owner was well enough to care for them again.
We were told about Monty, a lively border terrier, by neighbours. His owner had a bad fall and broke his leg. We found Monty in a garden shed, he’d been looked after by the people next door but it was far from ideal and he was very happy to see us. Monty went home as soon as his owner could get about again.
Sheba was a black alsatian whose family had a real upheaval. A fire in their loft meant their house was uninhabitable and they were staying in a hotel – no pets allowed. Sheba loved being with us but it was six months before the repairs to the roof were finished and the whole family could go home again.
We never know what fate has for us around the corner. What would happen to our pets if an emergency occurred? The Pet Samaritans are always here to help, we never put any healthy pet to sleep and even if the worst happened you would have the reassurance that your cat or dog or other small animals would have a good home for life.
Re-homing elderly pets isn’t always such a good idea. The home has to be perfectly suited to a pet who is most likely set in his or her ways. No worries though, pets can stay with us and they love it here. Lots of home comforts, fuss and t.l.c. Little Laddie, a terrier who came to us when his owner passed away, had his own armchair, cushions and blankets and loved going up the fields with us, he stayed ten years and lived until he was eighteen years old.
Our Emergency Pet Care Cards are free and we can either post one out to you (s.a.e appreciated) or call and pick one up from the sanctuary. Fill in your details, don’t forget your pet’s likes and dislikes’ and if the unexpected happens (and we hope that it won’t) we will make sure your pet is safe, comfortable and well cared for until they can come home to you again or for the rest of their life if necessary.
Our ‘Golden Oldie” club has some lovely cats and dogs in already – a small donation to help us with pet care is much appreciated. [donate]
