Cinnamon the guinea pig came into the Pet Samaritans last month as an emergency admission. A series of extremely sad events events had led to poor Cinnamon desperately needing our help. She is around 6yrs old and her elderly owner wasn’t aware of her needs. Cinnamon was emaciated, dehydrated, her nails and teeth over grown, her coat was urine stained and her eyesight has been affected by the lack of nutrition. She had lost her guinea pig mojo and was extremely depressed and despondent.
On collection Cinnamon’s enclosure contained a small piece of swede that was several weeks old and no bedding or water. We understand the owner was also a carer for his grandchildren, who have now been taken into care and the gentleman is receiving the help aswell.
Our main priority for Cinnamon was to get her re-hydrated and eating.
Cinnamon’s nails were extremely overgrown. Unfortunately, cases like this are something we see all too often at the animal sanctuary.
After she had recovered and built up some strength, the team set about cutting out the matted fur, giving her a bath to wash off the urine stains and cutting her nails.
The good news is, Cinnamon has been fostered by one of our volunteers where she will have the opportunity to chat with other guinea pigs and hopefully over time make some cavy friendships. Guinea pigs are sociable and chatty rodents who suffer mentally and physically when they are housed alone. They need companionship of their own species to communicate, play and cuddle with.
We’ll have some more updates on Cinnamon’s progress in the coming weeks. If you would like to support her, you can make a donation here.
