A cat who came in as a stray has just given birth to two beautiful kittens. It’s unusual to have only two, an average litter is four kittens, although we’ve known six or seven. Two is just right for this mum as she’s a youngster herself and new to rearing a family. So far she’s doing well and purring and fussing and feeding them. They seem to put weight on by the minute so she must have plenty of milk. This is one big advantage of a small litter – more milk to go round. Kittens from large litters are always tiny till they get going and start feeding themselves. These two little ones are both girls – how do we know? Because they are calico coloured – white, black and ginger so it’s in their genes that they are female.
