Mr. Pecker is doing well. We moved him into an aviary this week and loves the space and that he can see outside. Without any difficulty he managed to flutter to a low branch. He’s still a long way from being able to fly properly but it does look as though his wing his healing, it will take a long while though. Mr. Pecker is a lovely bird, very intelligent and he’s realized that it’s not good manners to peck the hand that feeds you so he’s stopped attacking me.
He tips his head on one side and we communicate with each other – mainly about food. He lets me know he’s hungry by going to his dish and looking at it and then at me – come on, where’s my mince? He eats grain and scraps of bread and biscuits but he’s a real carrion crow and it’s meat he likes best.
These crows will eat almost anything though and chiefly feed on the ground, hopping around and pecking up whatever they fancy. If you give them a nut they will soon figure out how to get it open, usually by flying high and dropping it so that the shell cracks. Our fella can’t do that yet so he has his peanuts ready shelled.
