When new cats come in to the sanctuary we like them to have a vet health check. As well as being vaccinated we need to make sure they don’t have any underlying health problems which might affect their recovery and well being.
So today we gathered a group of the cats together – what’s going on Daphne? Their eyes were like saucers as waited for the vet to arrive. There are too many new cats in the sanctuary at present for us to get them all treated at one time so we have to do it in stages. We are fortunate in having some excellent and caring professionals at Spire Vets. The only downside is that they are so good they are always in demand and busy!
Sox was the first cat to be examined. She has seen the vet before when she had a mammary inflammation and a lesion on her jaw. Thankfully she is recovered from both those conditions but the vet was unable to vaccinate her because she has a slight infection. It isn’t surprising given that she was in such poor condition when she arrived. Sox is better than she was though and is brighter and enjoying life more. Sometimes it takes a long while for a very sick cat to recover and we have to be patient. Hopefully this next round of antibiotics will do the trick.
Pebbles doesn’t like her routine being changed and was very suspicious of meeting the vet. We fussed and coaxed her though and she soon thawed, not quite purring but fairly laid back about being examined by a stranger. Pebbles was found to be in good health and the vet estimated her age at between 10 and 12 years. Her beautiful eyes, one bloue, one golden, were commented on and Pebbles was vaccinated before she realised what was happening. She does has a very knotted coat and resents being groomed – as most cats do when the knots have been there a long time and are close to the skin. The vet decided to leave dealing with them till the warmer weather comes. We’ll keep teasing and cutting them out without causing Pebbles any stress when we can.
We had to have a quick name change for one of the black kittens who came in recently. Gina has turned into Gerry – a neutered male with an all-black sister (so we got that right at least). Gerry is in very good health and had his vaccination without a murmer. All he needs now is a new home? Anyone? He’s a lovely personality plus playful, fussy, friendly playmate. Please come and see him if you are looking for an older kitten. About six months the vet thinks.
It wasn’t such good news for Maisie who has real health problems – was the tight collar to blame? More coming soon…….
