When Frostie’s owner passed away he was left all alone, the rest of the family lived abroad. Frostie had been a stray cat to begin with, only the kindness of this elderly man living alone, saved him from starvation. Frostie found himself back with no one to feed him and he had to live outside in the garden. When the relatives learned of his plight they rescued him but it was only temorary, they lived abroad and he couldn’t go home with them, it was just too far away.
The date of their return home flight was coming every closer and they had to find somewhere to take him in. It was the same everywhere they tried – ‘sorry we’re full’ – which is what we often say because it’s true, there are demands for cat spaces every day.
We give priority to bereavement cases or when owners have gone into hospital. The relatives were running out of time and it looked as though Frostie might have to go to the Great Cat Home in the Sky if a place couldn’t be found. When we heard Frostie’s story we resolved to find a space somehow! We need lots more cat pens though, we have the space and infrastructure to save many more cats if only we had more pens. We went round our golden oldies – Pusscat agreed to share with Charlie and Cleo moved in with Bing and Grondhal and somehow we made room.
After some initial plaintive meows Frostie began to settle. It’s hard for cats to be sure they will be alright and that it isn’t a visit to the vet. We gave Frostie lots of fuss and dainty meals and he soon began to settle. He ate his supper, gave us a few timid smiles and life soon began to look better.
