It’s been a hectic weekend with more wildlife casualties than usual brought in. The first to arrive were fledgling birds, several different breeds, all tiny. The best thing to do if you find fledglings is to either leave them alone (unless they are in danger from predators) or handle them as little as possible and put them either back in the nest or as high up as you can. When you are not around the parents will, hopefully, come and feed them and that’s all it takes to get them going, a few meals from mum and they will have another attempt at flying and maybe be successful this time.
The baby hedgehog (above) was close to death when he was brought in and was cold and dehydrated. We warmed him up on a heated pad and bottle fed him. At first it seemed hopeless but then he started sucking and ….. fingers crossed, he is looking much better now.
A large owl came in next but looks quite poorly. We haven’t managed to get him eating yet but he is calm and at least he is safe. He may have been hit by a car and have internal injuries. Giving him chance to get over the shock and recover is the best we can do at present, he’s a beautiful bird so we hope he makes it.
Update coming soon ……..
