Poor Buffy, after being savaged by an out of control dog she is still very sore and can’t walk properly. She’s been on antibiotics for several weeks and the wound itself is healed, although tender. The problem is that the muscle in the top part of her leg was torn out when the dog savaged her and now it’s gone. It looks as though she will be permanently crippled. She tries to go out with her friends the little ponies and they wait for her, but sadly she can’t manage more than a few steps. She might improve in time and we’re massaging her leg and putting aloe on it – but can muscle re-grow? I don’t know. There may be tendon and nerve damage also.
This dreadful incident highlights the importance of proper training for puppies and young dogs. Also, that they must be kept under control and on the lead when walking through farmland.
We had an amazing experience when walking a staffi who was in the sanctuary last week. Buffy was in the stable but the door was open and she was looking out. The ponies – Pixie, Chloe, Bridget, Grace, Ruby and Daydream – were in the field. Suddenly their heads went up and they began to canter and charged at the staffi, only stopping when we shouted to them that it was alright. They skidded to a halt a few yards away, ears pricked and snorting with anger. They are used to dogs and normally ignore them. Did they think this was Buffy’s attacker? It’s the only explanation.
