Toby is a young Jack Russell and the lastest arrival in the sanctuary. He is a super little fella but needs special care as he has had to have one of his front legs amputated after a bad accident. Poor little Toby broke his leg in several places and the injuries were too bad to heal. His leg was taken off at the shoulder so he is a bit different to our other three legged dog. Jack Spratt still has half his leg. There is a callus at the end and he used this to balance on sometimes. The vet considered taking all of his leg off at the time but thought it would be too traumatic for Spratt to undergo the operation. We agreed, Spratt had broken bones also and would never have survived the surgery.
This is Jack Spratt – he can still get around pretty well but is disadvantaged by the original damage to one of his back legs and his pelvis. He doesn’t consider himself disabled in any way and thinks he is a rottweiler and not a Jack Russell, especially when another dog dares to look at his partner, Miss Nolene (who is also disabled).
Miss Nolene had an operation to remove a hernia which was causing paralysis when she first came in. After months of therapy she learned to walk again, although she is stiff on her back legs and doesn’t do steps very well. Nolene’s temperament is quite different to that of Spratt and Toby. She’s a nip first and think later type of dog – but we love her just the same!
Toby is a very handsome young chap with a broken coat and striking tan patches. He is very well behaved and has settled really well. He is a bit timid with people he doesn’t know but when he does become friends you can expect loads of love and fuss from him.
An especially kind and caring home is wanted for this brave little dog.
