Badgers Midnight Call

One of our Wildlife Wardens went to check on the badgers last night and as usual it was quiet and peaceful around their setts.  We go have a look round every evening just to make sure that there is no one disturbing them.    Jude went to bed but was woken at midnight by sounds outside, underneath the bedroom window.   It sounded like someone walking round.   He got up quietly and looked outside – there were two badgers snuffling round in the yard.   He watched them and saw that they were rummaging round in the dog dishes and looking for scraps.  When they saw him one of the badgers ambled off straight away, the other was a bit confused about which way to  go, then he got his bearings and went after his pal.

We think that we’re watching the wildlife but of course, the wildlife is watching us too!    How many times have the badgers seen us coming down to their setts (we never go too close as we don’t want to disturb them) and then watched as we’ve gone back up the fields to the house.   Last night they must have decided to come and see where we live –  we feel very privileged that they feel safe with us and we hope they come again –  it was a magical encounter.

It’s one of our special ambitions to make our large wildlife area more secure and also to build a ‘hide’ so that the fox and badger activities could be seen without there being any disturbance.   We are planning to install hidden cameras to get film of our wildlife friends – but  it all takes a great deal of money.   We’d like to be able to share knowledge of our resident badgers and foxes with all our animal loving pet samaritan friends.
