We’ve had three tiny hedgehogs brought iu this week. We don’t know what happened to Mum but these babies were all alone for over a day. The hope is always that their mother will come back to get them but she may not have been able to and these little ones would surely not have made it if they hadn’t been brought to us. We weren’t too optimistic about their chances at first, they were cold, which is a bad sign and they were dehydrated. They are very young, their eyes not open at first. A heated pad and a some warm milk (not cow’s mil which they wouldn’t be able to digest) was our first treatment – we have special ‘hedgehog’ milk which is a formula that suits these tiny tummies.
The first night is critical and amazingly they survived and even perked up a bit by next morning. When hedgehogs curl up into a ball it is a good sign, that things are getting back to normal and they have their strength back. We’ve stopped the baby bottles now as they are nibbling at food and lapping their milk up. We’re still keeping them warm and it will nr a while before they can manage without heat. Sleeping, eating, drinking, being checked over and all is well – so far so good.
Snug as a bug!
Love those little hands!
