Baby bat is doing well

bats - boris - 1

Boris the baby bat is doing well, he’s feeding with enthusiasm and takes milk every couple of hours.  When he’s ready for feeding he squeaks to us!  It’s amazing how he responds and communicates.  Already he has likes and dislikes.  When he’s been fed he settles down and likes to be snuggled in a fleece, nice and cosy.  When he’s hungry he climbs out and wants to be held.  He won’t feed unless he can wrap  round a finger, he likes the feel of skin when he’s suckling.

He has little teeth now, maybe had them from birth but we’ve only just been able to see them.  Boris clings on and looks at us with such a loving and intelligent expression, although he’s so tiny he has a big personality.

Baby bats are called pups and would normally suckle from their mothers.  They call to each other and have a bond between them.  Bats stay in their colony and when we release Boris (when he’s fully grown) we’ll take him back to the colony near where he was found.

You can just see his little teeth in the picture below.  This is how he likes to be wrapped up for sleeping.   Yesterday when we unwrapped him he had his wings out for the first time.  They are huge (in comparison to the rest of him) and as fine as gossamer.  He enjoyed stretching them for a few minutes and then snuggled back into his nest.
